Protein cost calculator

Compare two products using the whole-package price and the serving information on each label.

Use prices in the same currency. Changing the currency changes the display only; it does not convert prices.

Product A
Product B

Illustrative example, not market prices: Product A is $5 for 5 servings with 20 g of protein each; Product B is $4 for 4 servings with 10 g each.

Cost per gram means grams of protein, not grams of food. 20 g is a comparison unit, not a recommended portion or daily intake. Cheaper protein does not mean a food is nutritionally superior. Consider the rest of the food and how much of the package you will use.

Enter both products, then select Compare costs.

How to compare protein costs

Use the whole-package price

Enter what you would pay for the entire package, using the same currency for both products. Include discounts only when they apply to your purchase.

Read both serving figures

Copy servings per package and grams of protein per serving from the same label. Do not enter the weight of the food as its protein amount.

Compare protein value

A lower cost per gram means less money for the same amount of protein. The per-20-g figure makes small differences easier to read; it is not an intake recommendation.

The formula, with a simple example

Cost per gram of protein = package price ÷ (servings per package × protein per serving).

A $5 package with five servings of 20 g protein contains 100 g protein: $5 ÷ 100 = $0.05 per gram, or $1 per 20 g. A $4 package with four servings of 10 g contains 40 g: $0.10 per gram, or $2 per 20 g. These are illustrative prices, not market data.

Make the package fit your week

The cheapest protein on paper may not be the best purchase if half the package goes uneaten. Plan amounts you can use, especially when appetite changes.

Protein cost questions

How do I calculate cost per gram of protein?

Multiply servings per package by grams of protein per serving to get total package protein. Divide the whole-package price by that total. The result is the cost of one gram of protein, not one gram of food.

Can I compare food with protein powder?

Yes. Yogurt, tofu, canned foods, and protein powders can be compared when you have each package price, number of servings, and protein per serving. Price alone does not compare taste, dietary needs, or the rest of the nutrients.

Why can the cheaper package have more expensive protein?

The packages may contain different numbers of servings or different protein amounts per serving. Comparing cost per gram of protein puts both packages on the same basis.

Does changing currency convert prices?

No. USD, EUR, and GBP change the display only. Enter both package prices in the same currency before comparing.

Does the lowest cost mean the best food for me?

No. Consider what you enjoy, what fits your needs, and how much of the package you will use. If your appetite varies during GLP-1 treatment, a smaller package you finish may work better than a larger one that goes uneaten.
